A Tradition of Trading Up: The History Behind Busby's Trade-In Days
From a small heating business in 1945 to a trade-in program that has spanned generations, Busby's has always believed that home comfort should be within reach.
Long before energy efficient heating and cooling systems, smart thermostats, and modern HVAC technology became part of everyday life, J.C. Busby understood something that still holds true today: every family deserves a comfortable home, and upgrading their heating and air conditioning should be an attainable goal. That belief helped shape the early years of Busby's Heating & Air Conditioning and eventually inspired a tradition that continues today - Busby's Trade-In Days.
The story of Busby's began in 1945 and from the beginning, the business focused on helping homeowners improve their everyday lives through dependable products, practical solutions, and honest service. Those principles would soon become the foundation for one of J.C. Busby's most recognizable marketing ideas.
A page from Busby's history, originally published in the Coleman Bonded Line Bulletin in 1962.

In 1962, a trade publication called the Coleman Bonded Line Bulletin featured J.C. Busby and his approach to heating equipment trade-ins. The article described a business owner who recognized that replacing outdated heating equipment could be an opportunity for both the homeowner and the company.
At the time, Busby's was already using trade-in promotions to encourage homeowners to replace older heating systems with newer equipment. Rather than simply advertising new furnaces, J.C. Busby developed a program that gave customers a practical way to put the value of their existing equipment toward an upgrade. The concept was straightforward: homeowners could receive a trade-in allowance for their old heating equipment, helping offset the cost of a new system.
By 1962, the program had become an ongoing part of Busby's business, supported by local newspaper and radio advertising. What began as a practical way to help customers afford home comfort improvements had become a recognizable part of the Busby's approach to serving the Augusta community.
More than six decades have passed since that 1962 article, and the heating and air industry has changed dramatically. Busby's has grown alongside those advancements. Now serving the CSRA as a third-generation family business, the company continues to build on the values established by J.C. Busby: quality, integrity, honesty, and customer satisfaction.
Today, Busby's carries on J.C. Busby's original vision through its annual Trade-In Days, giving homeowners opportunities to upgrade to a new, high-efficiency Carrier heating and cooling system. For homeowners considering a replacement, a professional evaluation can help determine the right equipment for their home, comfort needs, and budget. Busby's Comfort Consultants can assess the existing system and ductwork and discuss replacement options, including available financing.
The technology may continue to evolve, but the tradition of helping neighbors stay comfortable lives on.
